FROM THE MORE THAN RESILIENT LIFE

Book excerpts

Various excerpts from the book...

...From the Preface

Thank you for purchasing ‘MORE THAN RESILIENT - PRACTICAL PREPAREDNESS FOR RIGHT NOW AND THE FUTURE’. This book is intended to give you a starting point from which you can move yourself towards a more sustainable and robust way of living. Through sharing practical wisdom, it means to equip you with real world solutions to help you live more than resiliently in our current culture.

Each of the chapters in this book take a look at a specific topic relating to personal preparedness. They offer knowledge and advice for each topic. Finally, included throughout this book are the ‘More Than Resilient’ goal sheets. These sheets feature a 'One Thing' primary action Goal, and ongoing ‘Regular Care’ action Goals, and ‘More Than Resilient’ action Goal towards greater growth in the topic.

The ‘More Than Resilient’ goal sheets intend to help you move from where you are right now towards greater personal preparedness and responsibility in a reasonable amount of time. So you're not just reading and knowing some information, but actively doing something with it. The result hopefully being greater resiliency in life for you and your loved ones.

...From Chapter 1: 'DO THIS FIRST'

In our shift towards greater resiliency, we need to know where to start. Since we're already in dire straits as a culture, we need to a make an informed decision quickly. The problem is we have issues on multiple fronts; our food, our finances, our families and more. Where do we begin? In this first chapter, we're going to focus on the very basics of what you should have for real world survival. Because without these everything else will be moot. You can remember the very basics of survival by using the ‘four rules of threes’. They are:

  • You need 3 minutes of air to live.
  • You can survive 3 hours in an extreme environment whether hot or cold.
  • You can survive approximately 3 days without water

  • You can survive approximately 3 weeks without food

Now all of us have air. I’ll also assume, for now, that you have some measure of grid-tied shelter. So water & food are the one's we need to focus on to get our basics in order. This is where we begin.

THE ABSOLUTE MINIMUM: THREE DAYS OF FOOD & WATER

Both Ready.gov in the United States and Getprepared.gc.ca in Canada state that the very basic amount of water and food one should have on themselves for an emergency situation is three days worth of water and food. So the very first thing to determine is if you have that amount on you.

The common measure for needed water is 1 gallon or 4 litres of water per person per day. At first glance, this may seem like a lot of water, but it is for both drinking and cleaning uses. The average water bottle carries 500 ml. So, based on that metric you need 8 bottles per person for a day.

The common measure of a daily amount of food is 2000 calories per adult person, give or take a few hundred calories. How does that translate into actual food in your pantry?

An easy way is to measure how many calories are in each of your canned items and add them up. The average caloric amount of, say, a can of chili is about 500 calories. So, if an adult needs 2000 calories then you need 4 cans of chili to cover you for one day’s needed caloric intake. Do the math and that means for three days, you need 12 cans of chili. There. Now you have a simple and effective metric to know if you’ve got what you need.

...From Chapter 3: 'Food'

Victory Gardens

The type of garden we want to make is a specific one that harkens back to World War 2. There were times during the war when regular people had to ration due to lack of regular commodities. As a result they were encouraged to make their own gardens to supplement not only themselves, but also the war effort.  These gardens became known as 'Victory Gardens'  and the same idea is still applicable today. It’s a primary source that you can shift greater and greater attention to over time as you get better at growing your own food. Though we’re not dodging real bullets at this point, we are dodging the increased pressures against our freedoms – in this case, our freedom to get good healthy food.

By building a victory garden you can learn how to supply for yourself while also prepping to help others if need be. The others in this instance can be those within your MAG or your immediate sphere who may need some help with food to survive during extra difficult times...

...From Chapter 4: 'Health'

Beginning with the staple of many a home remedy, bone broths are the result taking bones of animals, and with the addition of various vegetables on hand, simmering the items all together for a nutrient rich stock. These can become the basis for soups that can comfort a sick person. These bone broths also support your deep immune system so that you stay healthy in the first place...

How does this apply to health, beyond the comfort of a warm cup of homemade goodness? The answer is the nutrients from the marrow of the bones. Marrow is spongy tissue from the core of bones which is key to the creation of stem cells which develop into blood cells....

These blood cells facilitate oxygenation in the body as well as overall immune system functionality. It also carries various vitamins such as Vitamin B12 in its mix...

...From Chapter 7: 'Vocational Resiliency'

At a certain point ... those who are opposed to ... will need to find work that they can do outside of the normal mode of culture.

These types of careers are ones that can still provide your needs, if not money, should common avenues of commerce ever be closed to you. The following list is not extensive but these are some career ideas that you can explore.

Along with these are lists of books relating to that skill or career for you to explore more on your own. Examples include:

FARMER - This is the first one that comes to mind because you should already be implementing some measure of food production for your own food security. In-system you can sell that produce or livestock for a profit. If you're ever pushed from the system, you can still feed yourself with what you raise and grow. You can also leverage your produce/livestock out-of-system within an intentional resource network you are connected to. Things to make note of include proper produce management; making enough for you to eat, seed save and then surplus to sell/barter.

  • The New Organic Grower - Eliot Coleman
  • Your Successful Farm Business: Production, Profit, Pleasure - by Joel Salatin
  • The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower’s Handbook for Small-Scale Organic Farming - by Jean-Martin Fortier
  • A Soil Owner’s Manual: How to Restore and Maintain Soil Health - by Jon Stika
  • Restoration Agriculture: Real-World Permaculture for Farmers - by Mark Shepard
